What makes samoyeds special?

Samoyed is a beautiful, intelligent, and affectionate breed known for its signature “Sammy smile,” thick white coat, and gentle nature. Originally bred by the Samoyede people of Siberia, these dogs were working companions—used for herding reindeer, pulling sleds, and living closely with their families. That close bond is still deeply rooted in the breed today.

At Jenkins Canines, we value the Samoyed for its loyalty, temperament, and versatility as both a family companion and an active working breed.

🐾 Temperament & Personality

Samoyeds are:
• Friendly and people-oriented
• Gentle and affectionate with children
• Social with other dogs
• Intelligent and eager to please

They thrive in family environments and do best when included in daily life. Samoyeds are not typically aggressive and are known for being welcoming rather than protective, making them wonderful companions but poor guard dogs.

🧠 Intelligence & Trainability

Samoyeds are highly intelligent and capable learners, though they can be independent thinkers. Positive reinforcement training works best. Early socialization and consistent training are key to raising a well-mannered Samoyed.

They excel in:
• Obedience
• Agility
• Sledding & pulling sports
• Therapy and family companionship

🏃 Exercise & Activity Needs

This is an active breed that enjoys daily exercise and mental stimulation. Samoyeds do best with:
• Daily walks or playtime
• Space to run and explore
• Engaging activities or training sessions

A bored Samoyed may become vocal or mischievous, so regular activity is important for a happy dog.

✂️ Coat & Grooming

Samoyeds have a thick, double coat designed for cold climates.

Coat care includes:
• Brushing several times per week
• More frequent grooming during seasonal shedding (“blowing coat”)
• Regular nail trims and ear care

Despite their thick coat, Samoyeds are known to be relatively clean and odor-free.

Is a samoyed right for your family?

Samoyeds thrive in happy, outgoing, and loving families. If you're an active family that enjoys spending time outdoors, a Samoyed might be the perfect companion for you! Their friendly and affectionate nature makes them wonderful family pets.

Things to know before you get a samoyed

Before welcoming a Samoyed into your home, it's important to be aware of their grooming needs. Their thick, beautiful coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting. Be prepared to invest time in grooming your Samoyed to keep them happy and healthy!
